My mom heard from her old camper today, Stacy. She came to one of my mom’s shows in the Midwest; she was my girls’ age when I was my mom’s age. So cute! She was always the rambunctious, tomboyish trouble-maker - she had squeezed my mom’s boob and made my mom pour hot coffee all over herself, and then my mom slapped her, although she remembered my mom’s response being a bit more mellow. She has four sons and runs a center for kid’s birthday parties, specializing in super energetic activities, as my mom put it. She looks beautiful, practically identical to how she was as a little kid. Such a cute story! Sounds like a woman who totally stayed true to herself throughout her entire life

Got oatmeal at Starbucks for the first time today, with Jamie in Scarsdale. Such a cute little set-up! They give you brown sugar, nuts, and dried fruit to mix in. It’s actually quite delicious

Then, for some reason, as I was trying to enter the subway turnstile to catch the Grand Central Shuttle back to Times Square, I forgot that I had to use my metrocard. I was literally holding it in my hand and desperately attempting to barrel through the turnstile, hurling myself against it, until some guy was finally like, “Uh, you need to use your metrocard…” I think I’ve been disowned from Manhattan

Jamie’s license plate is EAC, like the East Australian Current in Finding Nemo! Too cute

Carmine named his band after the condom brand TDX! Such a cool kid!

Today, Ms. Berger told us her life story. Her parents were always extremely frugal, and they would award she and her siblings maturity points for various things. She went to Tufts planning to be a French major, but she was intimidated, so she ended up majoring in Comparative Religions. So random

Went to the New Museum today with Ms. Lombardi and some art history kids. Had some incredible Japanese cream puffs on Grand Street, mini versions of the big ones at Mitsuwa! Here were some of the things I liked:

Minam Apang

Abigail Deville

The Propeller Group

Shabi (sp?) Genre of music - Indian techno

Went to Le Vain bakery today with some people. I was wearing my Coachella shirt, and one of the guys working there started talking to me about it. He had watched more bands over the live youtube feed than I had seen live! He was a nice guy - gave me a massive cup of tap water, so I was pleased

Went to amazing classes at Williams. In Music Theory, we listened to a gorgeous 45 second piano piece: Luigi Dallapiccola’s Colore, the ninth piano piece in the Quaderno Musicale di Annalibera from 1952. There’s a very cool shout-out to the circle of fifths towards the end of the piece. Can’t wait to fully understand the theory behind this kind of stuff:

Today, as I was on the bus up to Williams for Previews, I witnessed a heart-wrenching goodbye between a gorgeous couple. We had stopped in Waterbury, CT, and I looked out the window to see two black twenty-somethings, totally charged with energy. They would look at the ground, then back at each other, tears glimmering in their eyes; he would reach out and hold her hand, she would place her hand on his waist; savoring little moments and touches, trying to absorb as much of each other as possible without too much emotional pain. As the bus driver made the final call, he clutched her to him, his hand gripping her hair and locked around her waist; her head was buried in his shoulder, her arms thrown around his neck. They let go of one another after about three seconds, shared one last glance, filled with helpless sadness, and then she walked away. He stared after her for a few moments, then came on the bus and sat down next to me - he was a really sweet guy. Man, I would kill to know the back story behind those two.

Also, the lyrics to By the Way by the Red Hot Chili Peppers are utterly bizarre

Nothing much to report - it was a travel day. Really delved into some amazing Rimbaud - I adore Sun and Flesh

What an insane day.

As we were driving to Coachella for day 2, I was playing DJ with Mark’s iPod, and he had almost every artist off of the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack! I only know one of each of their songs off of that one album, but he had multiple albums for each artist, like Shawn Mullins, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sophie B. Hawkins, etc. So random and excellent

As Avery and I were walking through the campground to the main festival, there was some dude singing Tom’s Diner while dancing on top of a haystack, surrounded by writhing girls, who called us over to dance. We turned him down, but it was a surreal moment

Dragonette’s keyboardist looked exactly like Fred Armisen! His smile, at least. Avery thought he looked like a grown-up Julian

So much shit went down during the Black Lips. Most notably, the two guitarists started making out, while continuing to play their instruments - one of them looked me dead in the eye, it was scary as fuck. Then, one of the guitarists (the one wearing a sombrero) pulled down his pants and attempted to play guitar with his flaccid penis. It looked incredibly painful and retarded

At the beginning of Andrew Bird’s set, I was standing next to a couple about my age. They each took a hit at one point, then moved back and let me move in front of them. I heard the girl complaining and asking to leave, and the guy was hesitant, but he eventually gave in. As they were preparing to work their way out of the crowd, the girl passed out! She just crumpled behind me, and there was a slight commotion, but the guy propped her up and got her the fuck out of there. So scary!

During Bon Iver, a stoned guy yelled out, “BON IVER IS FRENCH FOR GETTING LAID!” Words of wisdom
